4 Simple Strategies for Building a Sustainable and Consistent Writing Practice
Looking to build a sustainable and consistent writing routine this year? Here are my 4 best tips for making it work for you:
1. Make it easy
Don’t try to go for a 2 hour long writing session when you haven’t written in months; instead, make it easy on yourself and schedule a 15 minute session every day this week.
2. Make it important
You’re more likely to accomplish something when you consider it a priority. With a busy job and a family that needs you, it’s easy for your writing to drop to the bottom of your to-do list. Instead, consider how you would act if your writing was one of the most important things in your life. It doesn’t have to take precedence over your kids or your career, but maybe it’s more important than a Netflix binge or keeping the house perfectly clean.
3. Establish a community
It’s easier to get something done when you’ve got a group of people cheering you on, and you can see others achieve their goals. Find a local writing group, or start one yourself, and use the power of community to keep yourself on track. You don’t need a lot of people to create this community for yourself, and you don’t even need to leave your house to make it happen.
4. Own the identity
A writer is someone who writes, even if it’s not every day, or they don’t share their writing with the world. How might your actions change if you saw yourself not just as a mom, not just as an employee, but as a writer? Wear the title with pride, and notice how your actions begin to follow, one day at a time.
Let me know in the comments which of these resonates the most—personally, I’ve found a lot of success with identifying as a writer and owning the title. It makes it easier to show up every day when it’s not even a question that I’m going to write because that’s what writers do.
