3 reasons you haven’t made progress on your novel this week
1. You’ve set a writing goal that’s way too high.
2. You don’t have a solid plan for what you’re writing, so you don’t know where to go next.
3. You don’t believe that you can actually finish this novel, so you’ve been avoiding the manuscript.
Here’s what’s going on:
You’ve always wanted to write a novel, but months or years have passed, and you still haven’t finished it.
You’ve read all the craft books, watched all the webinars, listened to all the podcasts, but you still don’t have a writing routine, and you haven’t touched your manuscript in a week.
Your goals are too high—you want to write 2000 words a day, like your favorite author, but you barely have 5 minutes a day to even think about your book.
You don’t have a plan—you took some notes on what you think should happen in the book, and you created extensive character sheets, but you don’t actually understand the structure of your story, and you wrote yourself into a corner.
You don’t actually think it’s possible to write a novel—you’ve had this dream for years, you’ve told lots of people about it, but you haven’t actually finished it, and so you don’t think it’s possible.
You need to set more reasonable goals—try 250 words a day.
You need a solid plan—not just character sheets, but a solid foundation so you know the point of this novel, how your characters change, and what happens in each scene (don’t worry, I can teach you this foundation strategy!).
You must believe it’s possible, even if you aren’t sure how—by setting small goals, you make it easier to show up and write, and you start to build trust with yourself that you can make progress and finish this novel.
